As I read about becoming PADI certified for open water dives, I see different prices for the classroom and pool dives, plus are additional dives required (with extra fees?) neccessary for certification and why do I have to buy certain equipment of my own for certification, like snorkel, fins, boots and mask. Is this typical? Why do I have to purchase this stuff? How much does the gear cost? And I have two teenage daughters plus my husband interested in doing this for our cruise in August- should we pursue this, or just do the "beginners dive" that the cruise offers?
well when iwas taking my course i had to buy my own mask snorkel boots fins becasue this a necessitiy when your diving and you should always buy your own regulator and B.C. becasue these things not all dive sites have them to rent and you wouldnt want to share all that equipment that other people have used i have everything except my dive tank which you dont have to buy beavuse you can rent that anywhere but ive sometimes left some of my equiment at home and find it to very fruasting that i have to rent all this equpiment its really qutie annoying not to have your equipment as for the cruise dive you should only do it if you dont plan to go diving alot becaus the diving equipment does tend to get kinda of expensive but prices vary on what kinda brands you buy hope thid helps

One day an Irishman who had been stranded on a deserted island
for over 10 years, saw a speck on the horizon. He thought
to himself, "It's certainly too small to be a
ship." And, as the speck got closer and closer, he began to rule out the possibilities of a small
boat and even a raft.
Suddenly there emerged from the surf a wet-suited black
clad figure.
Putting aside the Scuba Gear and the top of the wet suit,
there stood a drop-dead gorgeous blonde!
The glamorous blonde strode up to the stunned Irishman
and said to him, "Tell me, how long has it been since you've had
a good cigar" "Ten years, " replied the amazed Irishman. With that, she reached over
and unzipped a waterproof pocket on the left sleeve of her
wet suit and pulled out a fresh package of cigars.
He takes one, lights it, and takes a long drag. "Faith
and begorrah, " said the man, "that is so good
I'd almost forgotten how great a smoke can be!"
"And how long has it been since you've had a drop
of good Powers Irish Whiskey?" asked the blonde.
Trembling, the castaway replied, "Ten years."
Hearing that, the blonde reaches over to her right sleeve,
unzips a pocket and removes a flask and hands it to him. He
opened the flask and took a long drink.
'Tis nectar of the gods!" stated the Irishman.
''Tis truly fantastic!"
At this point the gorgeous blonde started to slowly unzip
the long front of her wet suit, right down the middle. She
looked at the trembling man and asked, "And how long has it been
since you played around?"
With tears in his eyes, the Irishman fell to his knees and
sobbed, "Jesus, Mary and Joseph! Don't tell
me that you've got golf clubs in there, too!"
Love it. nothing untoward there!

I'm thinking of buying some swimming pool fins (not the scuba type, the ones designed for swimming training) I can't find much info on the benefits of using them though. I'm assuming they give more of a leg workout, which is what I'm after. Any info or links is much appreciated.
Buy the Fins! Get Zoomers. Fins help you feel how your supposed to be in the water. like how the water has resistance against you.

As a SCUBA diver descends below the water surface increasing her depth, she experiences increasing pressure. Recall that the job of a Scuba Regulator is to deliver air to the diver at the ambient pressure (that is, the pressure of the surrounding water at the diver’s current depth). If the diver is breathing air from her tank at a pressure of 4 atmospheres, what is her current depth?
If she is at 4 atmospheres of ambient pressure which includes the 1 atmosphere at the surface, then in salt water she would be at 99 feet but in fresh water
She would be at 2 atms at 33ft
3 atms at 66 ft
4 atms at 99 ft.
I she is in fresh water she would be at 102 feet because fresh water is less dense than salt water.
She would be at 2 atms at 34 ft
3 atms at 68 ft
4 atms at 102 ft.

I am a scuba diver and often end up peeing in my wetsuit because I have to go and don't want to deal with the huge drama of getting back on the boat or shore to pee. I know some other chicks I dive with say they do too, but then others say they don't, so I was wondering if any other girls do? (all the guys say they do)
Several of my dive buddies are female, including my wife, I know that most women do.
There's a saying:
There are those that admit to peeing in their wetsuit, and those that won't admit it.
Just remember to flush you suit out well, by cracking your neck seal, and letting fresh water in.

It’s like a long pole thing. Is that part of standard Scuba Gear? What IS it?
a harpoon gun ..

od cause you have all that equipment with you as well as an air supply better that sknorkaling
You need to be able to swim, but you don't have to be able to swim like a professional! It depends mostly on what qualification that you require. If it's only for a DSD (Discover Scuba Diving / Try-Dive), as long as you have a basic ability, you'll be fine. If you want a qualification, you'll need to be able to prove that you can swim, but again, technique isn't important.

What are the best fins, brand name, for wet
tsuit diving?
THERE IS SCUBAPRO, CRESSI, MARES, AQUALUNG, ETC.
AS THERE ARE MANY TO CHOOSE FROM, I WOULD SUGJEST A PAIR THAT'S NOT TOO HEAVY SO AS NOT TO
PUT TOO MUCH STRESS ON YOUR LEGS WHEN YOUR DIVING FOR A SPECIFIC LENGTH OF TIME…
