A couple SCUBA diving questions :)?
-What are some jobs that are scuba diving related? (and where are the job chances best?)
-How long do Scuba diving courses usually last? (weeks, hours..?)
-What are all the equipment peices that I would need? (oxygen, wet suit, ..?)
-About how much money would equipment and course take?
-If I am somewhat scared (not really scared, just iffy) about (big!) fish, would scuba diving help me face my fear and kind of get over it?
-and lastly, where are great spots to dive?
Jobs – scuba instructor, associated with marine biology/research, NOAH, commercial diver, dive charter operator, etc. Anything related to the tourism business and resorts isn’t that great at the moment. I don’t know about commercial diving oppurtunities
Courses – for your basic recreational diving certification (called Open Water Diver with PADI) you are looking at 20-25 hours for the pool and classroom, and then four certification dives. There is some at home study, reading, and video/DVD watching.
Gear – You’ll need mask, fins, boots, and snorkel for the class. From there it depends on how much you want to rent or buy. Other gear you could buy: wetsuit, drysuit, dive computer, hood, gloves, cutting utensil, regulator assmebly, BCD, air tanks, and other accessories.
Costs – for the class and basic gear (needed for class) you are looking at around $700 to $1000. The other gear all together can run another $1,500 to $4,000 depending on what all you buy, for example, my drysuit (custom size since I am 6′-9" tall) cost about $2,500.
Fear – become educated on the animals. Education (not the news or movies) will help you understand the animal and then you’ll gain respect for them. From there, and some exposure, the fear should lessen.
Spots – It depends. The Great Lakes in the US and Canada have tons of shipwrecks which are in great shape due to the fresh water. There are tons of excellent reefs in the Caribbean and Austrailia. The south Pacific has tons of beautiful small fish.
