Gills do not work in air just as lungs do not work filled with water. No if's, and's or but's. However, watch the movie The Abyss. It that movie, you will see some pure science fiction, where each diver's headpiece is filled with a pink fluid which the diver essentially breathes in. In the movie, this is a super saturated fluid with oxygen which does work like air transferring O2 and CO2 in and out of the lungs, but is incompressable just as water is. The whole idea is to not have any air spaces in the body which will collapse under pressure or expand when the pressure is released. As I understand things from a recent article, something like what only exists in the movie is being done with mice, in which some kind of oxygen supersaturated fluid is being used to keep the mice alive while submerged. Think about it, if you could get rid of the air spaces within the human body, G forces from acceleration would be minimized to a great extent. A fighter pilot could make almost unlimited maneuvers if he could literally ignore huge G forces which under normal circumstances would stop his breathing from the "weight" pressing on his chest from a high speed maneuver.
