Homemade Scuba Gear

Posted on Jul 29, 2009 under Scuba Regulator | 25 Comments

This is some home-made scuba gear me and my friend put together summer of ‘06.

The main air tank is actually a garden sprayer, and holds about 8 liters (2 gallons) of air compressed at 40psi. The tank is encased in concrete to make it neutrally boyant. The tubes across my chest are filled with rocks, and help neutralize our bouyancy. This design allows us to dive for 2 minutes straight, 10 or 11 feet underwater. This whole setup cost us about $55.

We now have much better Scuba Gear, with a 10 gallon tank that can hold 80psi. It allows us to dive for 15 minutes straight at a depth of 10 or 11 feet. The new setup cost about $60.

Keep in mind that this is very dangerous, and should not be attempted by anyone without proper scuba training (like us). I am not responsible in any way for any injuries you may sustain emulating something in this video. To put it simply, do not try this at home. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Haha. I wouldn’t dive with that on but “should not be attempted by anyone without proper scuba training (like us)”.. Okay, you dont have proper training.

I believe that’s not safety because you aren’t using dry air.

    Lets not start …
Lets not start making umptions on what is safe. Safety stop is there for a reason. If you spent an hour under water and went straight to the surface you will get bends. There is no way around it. Now you might get light version of bends and feel like crap for next 4 days or you may pass out on the boat. Scuba diving comes with responsibilities and that is why you are required to get a certification and thus learn how to dive safely. Kudos to these 2 guys swimming in the pool. Just be safe.

    Scuba tanks require …
Scuba tanks require filtered “dry air”. 1st ;so the moister in the air wont corrode the tank and 2nd; and more importantly, so the moister doesn’t condense in your lungs and give you phnemonia. Looks like a fun experament but be careful.

at least the one’s that didn’t kill themselves. Just get proper kit and training if you plan to go anywhere deeper than your swimming pool. And be sure to breathe out as u surface if something does go wrong, burst lungs are not going to be a nice experience, and most commonly happen in shallow water. (Read about Boyles Law)

  25. q80diver70 Says:

    No need to do …
No need to do safety stop at 60 feet as the dived did not go within the three presure gtoups of the RDP or 100 Feet. If the diver did go to 100 feet, he or she need to do safety stop. Though it’s a good practice to do so.
