While true to all new regulators, this was not always the case. While many of the older 1st stages that used HP hoses of the same size as the LP hoses are no longer serviceable, you will still come across one from time to time. Putting your LP hose in the HP port would be dangerous.
This video also shows the proper placement of your 2nd stage and LPI hoses which use the same size fitting, and which would make setting up your gear correctly difficult with improper placement.
