Which scuba diving regulators mouthpiece are more suitable for asian?

Hi! i’m looking into investing a regulator of my own as i do diving yearly. But i usually find the regulator rented from the dive shop are hard to cling on (i’m referring to the mouthpiece); i usually end up using 1 hand holding the mouthpiece through out the dive.

i do not know much about regulators brand, so am open to suggestion, but of course not too pricey, around S$500+-. Will i be able to get a decent and comfortable 1 around that price?

Also, where can i buy them from Singapore. Many thanks.

It probably won’t be the reg design that’s your issue, it’s the actual mouthpiece attached to the reg with a nylon tie. Most rentals will have the cheaper silicone type mouthpiece. For that matter, most divers use them too. They are a one size fits all deal. You won’t find much difference between all the manufacturers although there are some with an upper plate to fit the roof of your mouth. Again…all one size.

There are however, ways to have a customized mouthpiece at little cost. Typically, products similar to "Comfort Bite" or "Sea Cure". There are a few "imposters" using the Comfort Bite name, so be wary of what you’re getting. You want the moldable Comfort Bite which is the real deal. Not the silicone, brand name hijackers, one. This is a mouthpiece that you can form to fit your own mouth and dental work. They take a lot of the jaw strain away and make a HUGE difference in how that reg stays in your mouth. You can purchase one of these in any dive shop. All will stock them or a variant of them. You simply take the mouth piece out of the packaging and immerse it in boiling water for a minute or so (read the instructions on the package, it’s been awhile since I did mine), take it out of that boiling water, let it cool for a few moments and put it in your mouth. Bite down on it. Your teeth and jaw line will shape the mouthpiece to your own face. Nobody Else’s but yours. A total custom fit. You can then put that mouthpiece on any reg you want. I have a unique face, so do you. My customized mouthpieces stay in there with no effort at all. Even when getting fin kicked by a buddy. They cost about 20 Canadian dollars here and are available world wide. I don’t use anything else on all my primary regs. I still keep the silicone one on my octos though since it may not be me using them.
I’ll include a link to the Sea Cure below.

Edit: Yes, you’ll be able to pick up a decent entry level set of regs for about that price. Just like anything else, the more toys or bells and whistles , the more the cost. Things like an environmental 1 st stage probably isn’t something for you to think about as a option unless you plan of ice diving. Same can be said for tuned regs unless you plan on going techie at a later time. One thing you’d probaly like to think about is if the regs you plan on buying are O2 compatible. Should you ever want to go nitrox, they’ll need to be.

    Well said scubabob.

Also, many of the rental regulators that I have seen are older, larger models. New models have become smaller and more streamlined. Couple this with a good mouthpeice and you shouldn’t have any issues.
